Caso de éxito internacionalPor: José Luis Valverde Ortiz, superintendente de Gestión del Agua de Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde.AbstractPopulation growth, climate change, drought and other factors worldwide are affecting the availability of sustainable sources of clean and safe water. As a result of this global phenomenon, the water industry is experiencing unprecedented growth in water reuse projects. In Peru, a project already in operation is leading the initiative for the application of water reuse, relieving the Government and providing a solution to improve public health and the environment, by decontaminating the river water where wastewater used to be discharged without any treatment. We are very pleased to present this article on water recovery and reuse, which has been implemented for the first time in Peru on this scale with the participation of private companies in a win-win agreement with the Government. This document aims to promote the reuse of water by providing the right quality for a specific purpose, in this case mining, obtaining the social permit and complying with the environmental conditions and requirements established by the Peruvian Government to recover life in the river known as Chili in the city of Arequipa. This experience today creates trust and fosters the creation of ties between private companies and society. Furthermore, this project demonstrates that the coexistence of mining, people and agriculture is viable by sharing the responsibility of caring for the environment in benefit of quality of life.In addition, it is important to mention the progress made by the city of Arequipa in achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) for 2030 with the implementation of this project, and the resilience of the water cycle and the sustainability of an ecosystem that provides many tangible benefits to this Peruvian metropolis.
