APPLICATIONS OF ELECTRICAL TOMOGRAPHY TESTING TO GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING PROBLEMS IN MINING

Por: Kellwi Tejada, Ingeniero Geofísico; Selene Quispe, jefa de Investigación, Desarrollo e Innovación y Denys Parra, gerente general, Anddes Perú.

Abstract

The studies to characterize the materials that make up the foundations of mining components usually include the execution of direct research such as test pits or drill holes. However, the limitations of these works are mainly related to their spatial location and to the difficulty of modeling the possible hazards present in the area to be evaluated, such as geological faults, cavities, geomembrane rupture, etc., given their specific nature. In addition, in the case of the drilling activities in general, these usually imply high costs.

The electrical resistivity tomography test, based on the measurement of variations in subsoil electrical properties, both lateral and in depth, has recently become one of the geophysical exploration techniques widely used for modeling the subsoil indirectly, that is, without producing impacts to the environment and with very consistent results.

This paper has mainly focused on showing the latest applications of electrical tomography testing in the design and evaluation of different engineering projects for mining in Peru, such as leaching pads, tailings dams, dumps, among others, where this technology has successfully demonstrated its applicability, detecting leaks, landslide zones, cavities, etc., preventing long-term environmental impacts, remediation of mining structures and potential legal problems.
