− EXPERIENCE IN PODEROSA-SERNANP CORPORATE VOLUNTEERING: IMPROVEMENT OF THE INTERPRETATIVE TRAIL CHIGUALEN-PUERTA DEL MONTE-MON

Abstract

Compania Minera Poderosa (Poderosa) and the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp) have been working together for some years, which has allowed to create an alliance in favor of the conservation of the National Park of Rio Abiseo (PNRA) and contribute with the Sustainable Development of its buffer zone and the transition zone of the New Grand Pajaten Biosphere Reserve (RBGP), being PNRA its core zone.

It is important to highlight the condition of Poderosa of having its operations and concessions located in the buffer zone of the PNRA, as well as in the transition zone of the RBGP. The PNRA is one of the two sites in Peru that has the status of Cultural and Natural Heritage of Humankind (double category recognized by Unesco, considering itself as a mixed location). Knowing its importance, we assume the responsibility of being a main actor in the care of this Natural Protected Area (ANP).

In this sense, this alliance between Poderosa and Sernanp is consolidated for developing the Corporate Volunteering Project that seeks for Poderosa staff and their suppliers to commit themselves in favor of the PNRA and the RBGP, reinforcing in the first place the cooperative alliance between Sernanp and Poderosa in socio-environmental issues and, in second place, projecting its benefits to the rest of the social actors.

A multidisciplinary team of Poderosa, along with forest rangers and specialists from SERNANP, with the support of the Surveillance Committee of the Peasant Community Los Andes, made a first intervention in July 2016, around the interpretive path Chigualen-Puerta del Monte-Montecristo of PNRA with the purpose of sharing their knowledge for the enhancement of this path of great biological richness and scenic beauty, which is also the gateway to Gran Pajaten, helping Sernanp to have effective control of this access, making it more secure for future visitors, collecting audiovisual information that may be used to create educational material, and, on the part of Poderosa, that their staff can also receive an induction on-field about the value of this ANP and the care considerations we must take into account.
